Bio-Macromolecules from Municipal Solid Bio-Waste Fractions and Fish Waste for High Added Value Applications

Rest raw materials from fish processing industries and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) will have a second life as plastics, barrier packages, edible coatings and flame-retardant additives. One of the main aims of the DAFIA project is to prove that it is possible to make a 100% bio-based flame-retardant polyamide.

Tackling ‘grand’ or societal challenges

DAFIA aims to tackle the challenge of bioconversion of non-agricultural waste (in this case, residues from fish processing as well as OFMSW) into biomolecules for industrial applications (in this case, coatings for the food industry, flame retardants for the automotive and electronics industry, and polymers for various industries including the automotive industry). This is part of the H2020 industrial leadership pillar to speed up the development of technologies that will underpin tomorrow’s businesses.

Flame-retardant polyamide is currently used in the automotive industry, and a bio-based alternative is of interest to reduce the industry’s dependence on petroleum. Promoting bio-based products is part of the European Union’s strategy towards the sustainable re-industrialisation of Europe. Nucleic-acid-based flame retardants are also of interest for their sustainable sourcing of phosphorous. Phosphate rock, used to make the popular flame retardant ammonium polyphosphate (APP), has been listed as a critical raw material.

Industrial Innovation (including innovation in services as well as products and processes)

DAFIA will develop innovative processes at pilot scale in three main areas: pretreatment of fish residues and OFMSW to allow them to be used for more purposes, fermentation to make intermediate chemicals (for polyamide synthesis), and production routes to various end products (formulation of flame retardants, polymerisation of monomers to polyamide and formulation of fish-waste derived edible coatings and barrier packaging).

This project has the potential to greatly impact the fish-processing and waste treatment industries as well as the chemicals and polymer industries. In particular, it is expected that DAFIA’s new FR additive will replace ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in many of its current applications, using similar dosage.
